Adoptees On(ly) Writing with Sullivan Summer

I am adopted

(From the Latin word, meaning:

To pencil in; to opt for)

James Cagney, “I Am Adopted”

Using examples from poets who identify as adopted, displaced, and former foster youth, we’ll explore several forms of poetry that might feel particularly resonant for adoptees looking for new or different ways to express themselves, as well as try our hand at writing our own poems. Whether you consider yourself a seasoned poet, or you’re someone who has never tried to write a poem, you are welcome in this space!

Sullivan is a co-host of Adoptees Off Script, and has interviewed poets Sarah Audsley, James Cagney, and others for the show. She holds a Poetry certificate from Brooklyn Poets, and presented scholarship on Black, transracial adoptee poetics at the 50th Anniversary Phillis Wheatley Poetry Festival at Jackson State University. She has been published in Raising Mothers, with work forthcoming in the Bacopa Literary Review.

Reminder - all Adoptees On Patreon live events are limited to participants who are adoptees.
